Choosing the Right Litter for Your Cat

Choosing the Right Litter for Your Cat

With so many different types of litter available, finding the right one for your cat may seem like a daunting task. Below are general descriptions of litter available and tips for helping you choose.

  • Traditional non-clumping litter: Traditional clay litters are widely available and used. The clay minerals are very absorbent, so they’re very good for controlling urine odors. It does need to be changed frequently.
  • Scoopable/Clumping litter: Clumping litter is also made of clay, but a different type than traditional litter. Scoopable litter is absorbent and good for controlling urine odors. Scoops need to be emptied frequently, but your litterbox on the whole will not need to be changed as often as traditional litter.
  • Crystal based or silica gel litter: This type of litter offers improved odor control and a less frequent need to be changed. It can be difficult to tell when it needs to be changed, some cats will refuse it because it’s lumpy, and some people believe it may be harmful to your cat.
  •  Plant-derived/Bio-degradable litter:  Plant-based litter can be flushed, is environmentally friendly, and is low in dust, making it ideal for asthmatic cats. It tends to be more expensive than other types of litter, however.

Start by choosing a litter that has the qualities you’re looking for in a litter (odor control, easy to clean, environmentally friendly). Watch your cat for its response to the litter you’ve chosen, as a fussy cat may refuse certain types. Your cat’s comfort and willingness to use the litterbox will be worth the experimentation you might have to do!
